A Model Covenant

Called together, as we believe, in the Name of God--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--to witness to the love of God for us and our world, in this place and time, as the {Name of Church}, with glad and generous hearts, we covenant to:

  • tell the story of God's love in Christ Jesus to any who will hear and receive it, inviting them to become part of the company of Christ, joining us in this work.
  • gather together regularly to worship God, "with style and grace," proclaiming God's word for us in our day, and breaking bread together at our Lord's Table.
  • support God's work locally through this congregation and around the world through our missions partners, by paying back to God what is God's already, with the Tithe as the reasonable standard, and, as God prospers us, with gifts from the heart and offerings of Thanksgiving.
  • live at peace with all people, insofar as it is within our power to do so, cooperate with fellow believers in spreading God's word and God's love, and keep ourselves--body, mind, and spirit--healthy and whole.
  • grow together as one people with One Lord, united as one in heart and mind in the Holy Spirit, continually seeking ways and opportunities to mature in the faith, as God gives us opportunity.
  • find and affiliate with another congregation of believers at such time as we move from this place or community or if we find ourselves no longer in substantial agreement with this congregation.
  • support and encourage those in the congregation elected to positions of responsibility and leadership, valuing their work and witness, learning from their example, and heeding their counsel, as it seems right and good to do.

And may God, who has begun this good work in us, give us the strength, endurance, good humor, and grace to complete it. Amen.

NOTE: This is NOT a covenant adopted by FBCTV. It is included as an example of a covenant drawn and adopted by a Fellowship/Church of Baptist Christians.

We are a Covenanting People

Historically, traditionally, Baptists are a "covenanting people" rather than a "creedal people."

That is, when a group of Baptists gathers together voluntarily as a congregation, we seek to describe our relationship as a community by making a covenant, rather than by prescribing a set of beliefs formed into a creed or statement of faith.

Members of a congregation are invited to subscribe to the covenant which they help form and voluntarily embrace, rather than to subscribe to a creedal statement which one part of the congregation seeks to impose on another.

In the same way, when congregations form associations, or when other relationships are formed between authentic Baptist bodies, the tool most often used to describe the nature of the relationship and mutual expectations for life together is the covenant, forged by the covenant partners, rather than by one person or party forcing their belief and practice on another.

In a word, our belief and practice is "embraced" rather than "imposed."
